This weekend at the movies, animation reigned supreme. The Wild Robot crushed everyone, Transformers continues to fall and master of filmmaking Francis Ford Coppola flops hard. Here are the box office results for this past weekend.
1. The Wild Robot took the number one spot this past weekend. Predictions had it making between 25 and 30 million dollars. The movie exceeded expectations bringing in 35 million dollars. Excellent word of mouth as well as excellent reviews most likely gave the film a boost. It truly is one of Dreamworks’ best with many saying it can take home the Oscar for best animated film of the year.
2. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice fell to number 2 this week bringing in a still impressive 16 million dollars. The movie has done very well but might fall a bit more due to next week’s release.
3. Transformers One only took in 9.3 million dollars with a drop off of 62 percent since last weekend. It truly is unfortunate as the movie has received high acclaim. It may be that after so many lackluster Transformer movies, audiences didn’t want to seek out another one.
4. Devara Part 1 is a film from India that took in an impressive 5.6 million dollars. I honestly have not heard anything about this one. In the film, a fearless man finds out that his brother is smuggling deadly weapons, turning them into enemies. N.T. Rama Rao Jr stars in this. People may recognize him from RRR fame.
5. Speak No Evil took in another 4.3 million dollars. The movie has been highly successful for Blumhouse bringing in almost 60 million dollars worldwide against a 15 million dollar budget.
In other news, the new Francis Ford Coppola film titled Megalopolis only made 4 million dollars over the weekend. The film has a budget of 120 million dollars. This could easily be the biggest flop of the year. It seems not many people even know who this movie was made for and the interest among general audiences has been low. Next week the sequel to Joker will be released. Come back to see how it does.
