When the last Insidious movie was released in 2023, I wrote a review saying how disappointing it was overall. I remember also saying I would be surprised if another one was going to be made due to how the franchise had been going downhill. Well, when they announced this new one was coming out, I was indeed surprised, but I wasn’t excited. This is coming from someone who absolutely loves the original film. With low expectations, I can say that this new Insidious movie, while not fully breaking any new ground, is a very solid and surprisingly good installment.
The Story
Gemma is a young mother who discovers she can travel into the Further, a purgatorial realm of lost souls. When something evil comes after her, she realizes she can bring what lives there back to the real world. Once the demons realize her power, our world becomes their playground.
The last couple of movies in the franchise have followed the same formula: Generic scares mixed with unmemorable characters. The only character worth following along has been the psychic Elise Rainier, played by Lin Shaye. One of the things that this new movie does well is give us some really good character development to characters that aren’t Elise. I have seen some people say the movie takes a while to get going, and I could not disagree more. We care a lot about Gemma and her daughter, so the stakes are more intense as the movie goes on. Elise is once again the glue that holds this franchise together, but we do not need to rely on her to enjoy the film.
Another thing this movie does well is introduce some new elements, finally. We still get the demons of the Further, but we also get some human antagonists in this one. Without spoiling, this movie has more of a cult vibe than the previous ones. We have several characters wanting to use the Further for their own personal gain. It’s exhilarating to feel something fresh in this franchise after so long. With these new elements, we are also given plenty of twists and turns that were really fun to experience.
The Directing and Scares
James Wan knew what he was doing with that first movie, delivering scares and a tense atmosphere. It’s no surprise that since his departure after Chapter 2, the movies have felt more generic, changing directors every time. Out of the Further’s director Jacob Chase finally delivers some well-made scares throughout and does James Wan justice.
There is a scene involving a pillow fort that is so memorable and well constructed; it has to be one of the best horror scenes of the year. The movie, for being PG-13, is pretty gross. There are also a lot of uncomfortable scenes throughout that don’t even have anything to do with blood and guts.
Overview
Insidious: Out of the Further is a big step up from previous installments in the franchise. The movie tries some new things and goes in different directions to keep us entertained. After the previous film, I did not need to see any more of these, but now with this new one, I welcome more sequels. Especially if they can capture any essence of that original film.
