After over two decades, the Scream franchise is moving away from Woodsboro and heading to New York City for its upcoming sixth installment. The choice to make the move to the big city offers up many exciting opportunities for Ghostface’s next assault, and according to one of the film’s stars, the change in location makes the next entry “20 times more mortifying.”
Melissa Barrera, who makes her return as Sam Carpenter in Scream 6, recently spoke with Collider and gave us a little taste of what we can expect from the film:
“It’s, like 20 times more mortifying. It’s awful. Because you also see how, in a city like New York City, everyone is kind of doing their own thing and someone is screaming for help, and no one will come to their help. No one comes to help them, you know, like, everyone’s kind of like, “I’m not getting into that.” So it’s mortifying, because you’re chased by Ghostface, but you also see humanity and how that reacts in a situation like that. Anyway, I think I’ve already probably said too much.”
Barrera has previously spoken more about the film and her excitement for where the franchise is heading:
“It’s been incredible. It’s a gift to be able to come back with people that I love. Getting to do it again, it’s like coming back home. We’re having so much fun – I can’t say too much about this one but it’s on another level. Matt and Tyler are injecting it even more with their personalities and their love for horror. And I think because they did such a good job in making a tribute to Wes in the last one, they feel like now they have a little bit more liberty to go in the direction they want to go, and it’s exciting.”
Plot details for Scream 6 remain under wraps, but the film “continues with the four survivors of the Ghostface killings as they leave Woodsboro behind and start a fresh chapter.”
Returning alongside Barrera in the next installment are Jenna Ortega, Jasmin Savoy Brown and Mason Gooding, who all made their franchise debuts in Scream 2022. Courtney Cox also makes her return as Gale Weathers alongside Hayden Panettiere who reprises the role of Kirby Reed from Scream 4.
New additions to the franchise include Samara Weaving, Dermot Mulroney, Jack Champion, Liana Liberato, Devyn Nekoda and Josh Segarra.
Radio Silence’s Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett return to direct the film which was written by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick.
Scream 6 is set to slash into theatres on March 31st, 2023.
