Sony’s upcoming Spiderman spinoff Morbius has released its brand new trailer. After what seems an age, the film gives us a closer look at Jared Leto as Michael Morbius, as well as some juicy hints to previous entries in the Spiderman Universe.
Morbius is based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name and tells the story of a scientist who tries to cure himself of a rare blood disease, but whilst doing so inadvertently infects himself with a form of vampirism instead.
The film serves as the next installment of Sony’s Spiderman Universe, and the trailer confirms events will indeed take place within the same world as Spidey and Venom. The production company already has plans in the works for other Spider rogues and anti-heroes to get their own cinematic content, but this confirmation of Morbius existing within the same universe offers so many exciting possibilities moving forward. Should the film, of course, merit extended versions of the character!
Matt Smith, Jared Harris, Adria Arjona, Tyrese Gibson, and Michael Keaton all co-star alongside Leto, as the film finally hits the big screen in January 2022.
The official synopsis for the film reads as follows.
One of Marvel’s most compelling and conflicted characters comes to the big screen as Oscar winner Jared Leto transforms into the enigmatic antihero, Michael Morbius. Dangerously ill with a rare blood disorder, and determined to save others from suffering his same fate, Dr. Morbius attempts a desperate gamble. What at first appears to be a radical success soon reveals itself to be a remedy potentially worse than the disease itself, unleashing darkness within. Will good override evil, or will Morbius succumb to his mysterious new urges?
