This past Thanksgiving weekend was the biggest one for movies this year. People swarmed to the theatres to see many different things but a Disney sequel rose above everyone else. Here are the box office results for this past Thanksgiving weekend.
1. Moana 2 crushed the competition having the biggest opening weekend for a non-Pixar, Disney animated film. This record was once held by Frozen 2. The movie made 221 million dollars over the 5-day Thanksgiving weekend. It was also the third biggest 3 day opening weekend movie of this year just behind Deadpool and Wolverine and Inside Out 2. Third place was held by Wicked for only one week until the release of Moana 2. This is also the biggest 5-day opening weekend of all time. It would be no surprise if we see a Moana 3 in the future. It is incredible that Disney initially wanted to put this movie straight on streaming.
2. Wicked took in another 117 million dollars for the long Thanksgiving weekend. Even though second place, the movie continues to defy expectations. After the first 2 weeks, the movie has already surpassed its budget and looks to make even more money when part 2 comes out.
3. Gladiator 2 took in another 44 million dollars this weekend. The movie has received good reviews even if some people didn’t think it lived up to the first movie. It’s hard to live up to an Oscar winner. The movie has now grossed over 320 million dollars worldwide.
4. Red One took in 18.2 million dollars over the Thanksgiving break. The movie as a whole has been a bust. Each week the money coming in is less and less and the movie hasn’t yet broken even when it comes to its budget.
5. The Best Christmas Pageant Ever won 5th place bringing in 4.8 million dollars. The movie has gotten good reviews from audiences and critics and seems like the most-liked holiday movie this season.
In other movie news, this past weekend was so good for the movies. It has been a struggle for theatres to perform well ever since the pandemic. There isn’t anything too big coming out in a few upcoming weeks so look for Moana 2 and Wicked to keep crushing the competition.
