We may have found the best movie of 2024 so far. At least the best action movie of the year. Kill premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival to high acclaim in 2023. Lionsgate released the film on over 1000 screens in North America and the positive reviews have been rolling in. Kill is an explosive edge-of-your-seat spectacle from beginning to end.
The plot follows Amrit who is a soldier who has come back to be with his love named Tulika. It turns out that Tulika’s father has chosen a husband for her and she is to be married soon. To try and stop the marriage, Amrit boards a train that his love’s family is on. A group of thieves board the train, attacking and harassing the passengers. Amrit and his friend do what they can to save his love in what turns into an action-packed blood-filled thrill ride.
First of all, this isn’t your typical Bollywood movie. It comes in at just under 2 hours and there isn’t any dancing and singing in it. Instead, we get what is sure to become a cult classic for the action genre. The movie wants to show off all the action it can quickly so it does a good job at establishing characters right away. We get who everyone is and what they want through simple conversations and easy dialogue. It’s simple but it’s just enough to make us care when everything goes down.
There are two different levels of violence in this film which is another thing the movie does very smartly. RRR was a highly successful 3-hour epic released in 2022 that didn’t give you its title sequence till almost an hour in. Before that, it hit you with so much that you had to ask “That was just the intro?” Kill does something similar but with a twist.
Our main hero Amrit seems to have a code he goes by. He is a soldier and when things go down, he seems to only hurt and knock people out. At about the 45-minute mark, something significant happens and the title pops up in big bold letters. KILL. Amrit turns into Jason Voorhees after this. I admittedly wondered why the movie was rated R, then I found out. Some of the nastiest bone-breaking I have seen in a film.
There may not be any dancing or singing in this movie but there still is plenty of choreography. Most of the film takes place on a train. There are many things in the way of even being able to walk properly, let alone fight. The fighting is truly like a dance and it is very impressive how they managed to get so many different kills and fight sequences in this movie and keep it feeling fresh.
Overview
Kill is an entertaining ride from start to finish. There are many blood-soaked fight sequences to go along with a great and powerful soundtrack. The movie manages to tell its story at a quick pace while still not feeling rushed. This is one of the best action films in a while, and one of the best of the year already. Full of character, heart, and edge-of-your-seat hand-to-hand combat.
