We continue with our 31 days of frights with Freaks from 1932. When trapeze artist Cleopatra (Olga Baclanova) learns that circus dwarf Hans (Harry Earles) has an inheritance, she marries the lovesick performer, all the while planning to steal his fortune and run off with her lover, strong man Hercules (Henry Victor). When Hans’ friends and fellow performers discover what is going on, they band together to get their revenge and save their friend.
The Story
This, in my opinion, is one of the most important horror films of all time, for several reasons. Director Tod Browning, who is most famous for directing the 1931 classic Dracula, wanted to make Freaks because he had a connection with outsiders. He actually had joined the circus in his youth, and he wanted to tell a story that respected the performers instead of showing them as monsters.
Browning cast real-life freak show performers in this movie, giving them a chance to show off their skills and personalities. This was a time when people with disabilities were ridiculed by society. They didn’t have many opportunities for jobs, and their quality was poor. They were rarely seen on the big screen, so even though most audiences didn’t respect them, even after that, they still got a chance to shine.
The movie ends up having more heart than one would think. We are introduced to these so-called freaks and led to believe they are the monsters, but as we watch, we discover who the real monsters are. Daisy Earles plays Frieda, the lover of Hans. Her performance is so heartbreaking, as all she wants is her lover to be okay. Throughout the movie, she is treated badly, and despite Hans abandoning her, she still tries to rescue him.
Overall
Freaks is one not to be missed, even though not many people talk about it. It has a great script and memorable characters. The film challenged social norms and put out a message that monsters can look like anyone. This is a message that is cliché now, but Freaks was ahead of its time. Freaks is a movie that will stick with you after it’s over. Definitely check out this masterpiece if you haven’t before.
Freaks is not currently available to stream.
