Supernatural Prequel “The Winchesters” Releases New Trailer

The CW has released a brand new trailer for its upcoming Supernatural prequel series, The Winchesters – which you can check out below.

Narrated by Jensen Ackles, who tells the story through Dean’s perspective The Winchesters will tell the epic love story of how John and Mary met, and how they put it all on the line to not only save their love but the entire world.

Ackles will also executive produce the series alongside his wife Danneel Ackles.

A more detailed synopsis for The Winchesters reads:

Mary is 19 years old and has been fighting the forces of darkness since she was a child. After losing someone close to her, the hardened hunter considers quitting the family business — until her father’s disappearance and the arrival of newcomer John forces her to lead a new team. John has recently returned from Vietnam. Selfless and clear-headed, he finds a new mission back home, where traces of his father’s past lead him to a secret organization and a whole new war as a hunter.

The series will see Drake Rodger (Murder RX, The In Between) and Meg Donnelly (American HousewifeZombies) take on the younger roles of John and Mary Winchester. Mary was previously portrayed by Samantha Smith and Amy Gumenick in Supernatural, while John was played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Matt Cohen at different points in the series.

Speaking in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Donnelly spoke more about her version of Mary, saying:

“She’s not very vulnerable. She doesn’t like to show vulnerability, because she’s gone through so much, especially as a hunter her whole life. She didn’t choose to be in this world, and she’s trying to look for ways to get out.”

She also admitted that she didn’t watch Supernatural during its run, saying it was “definitely too scary” – Rodger on the other hand admits to being a huge fan of the series. So much so that he even doubted whether he wanted to be a part of the prequel.
“When I came in for the pilot, I was like, ‘Okay, cash grab. Let’s see what we’re doing.’ I was so skeptical. And then once I read the pilot, I realized pretty quickly that there’s actually a story to be told here.”
Given the huge popularity of Supernatural, the pressure is on for all to deliver and respect the series legacy. Something that Ackles himself echoed as he recalled what advice he gave to the The Winchesters leads:
“There was probably a small pep talk. This isn’t just coming on to a new thing, this is something that has 15 years of intense storytelling and you guys are a representative of this thing that we built, of the family. And there’s a big population of people that are very protective of the story and of these characters and you are the new stewards of this and you need to understand the weight of that and you need to understand how important it is to treat this with care and respect. Because I’m like, listen, I didn’t work my ass off for 15 years to have you kids come in here and f— it up.”
The Winchesters premieres on The CW on October 11th.
