The horror genre has already delivered its first smash hit release of 2023, with M3GAN becoming fans’ new favorite killer doll. (Although Chucky might just have something to say about that…)
Given the huge praise for the film, and its already impressive Box Office return, talk of a sequel was inevitable. And now we have official confirmation that M3GAN will return with M3GAN 2.0 announced for a slated release of January 17th, 2025
Plot details haven’t been released, but Atomic Monster and Blumhouse’s campy horror sequel will see both Allison Williams and Violet McGraw return. The sequel’s director has not been announced, but screenwriter Akela Cooper will return to once again pen the script.
M3GAN debuted in theatres on January 6th and has already delivered strong numbers for the studio, generating an impressive $ 91 million globally to date, from a budget of only $ 12 million.
Producers Jason Blum and James Wan expressed their desire to make another film even before the killer AI doll exploded onto the big screen.
Speaking in a recent interview, Blum said:
“After I first saw the movie, we had a good sense that a sequel might really work. So, we broke our cardinal rule and we started talking about a sequel before the movie was released. I felt so bullish that we started entertaining a sequel earlier than we usually do.”
In case you missed it, the official synopsis for M3GAN reads:
M3GAN is a marvel of artificial intelligence, a life-like doll programmed to be a child’s greatest companion and a parent’s greatest ally. Designed by a brilliant toy-company roboticist called Gemma, M3GAN can listen and watch and learn as she becomes a friend and teacher, playmate, and protector, for the child she is bonded to.
When Gemma suddenly becomes the caretaker of her orphaned 8-year-old niece, Cady, Gemma’s unsure and unprepared to be a parent. Under intense pressure at work, Gemma decides to pair her M3GAN prototype with Cady in an attempt to resolve both problems—a decision that will have unimaginable consequences.
