Fandom Funding: The Michael & Susan Hogan Fund

Fandom Funding is where we feature a geeky/nerdy crowdfunding project that highlights an existing fandom or looks to create a new one.

Today’s Fandom Funding is a bit different than our usual feature, this Fandom Funding is to help out two fandom actors: Susan & Michael Hogan.

This Gofundme is being organized by a friend of the couple, Shari Ulrich, and 2 others.

“Michael and Susan Hogan have been dear friends and neighbours of mine on Bowen Island for 20 years but most of you probably know them from film and television – Michael as “Colonel Saul Tigh” in Battlestar Galactica, as “Hagan” in The Man in the High Castle, as “Otto Gerhardt” in Fargo”, or in any one of 150 roles he’s played over the years. And Susan from hundreds of TV, film, and theatrical roles over more than 4 decades,” says Ulrich.

Ulrich describes the couple as “private people,” but “they need our help.”

Susan Hogan bravely shares why they need you fandom fans to contribute to their Gofundme.

“ You probably know Michael as an actor.  Or maybe you know him as a friend, an acquaintance, a co-worker, a father, a grandfather, or a husband. My husband. I am Susan Hogan and I am married to this extraordinary man. We have been each other’s best friend for decades.

On Feb. 17, 2020, everything changed drastically in our world.  Michael was in Vancouver participating in a Battlestar Galactica convention, and at dinner following his day’s work, he fell and hit his head. Hard. He went to bed that night not realizing that the impact had caused a massive brain bleed.  He was unable to be woken the next morning and was taken to Vancouver General Hospital and emergency surgery performed. It took 57 staples to close the part of his skull they had to remove in order to reach the damage.

The accident left him with complete paralysis on his left side, memory loss, cognitive impairment, and an inability to swallow.  Then things became incredibly more difficult during the COVID pandemic with visits by the family being restricted then denied and no care team (physiotherapist, OT, speech therapist, etc. ) allowed in.”

Thanks to the kindness of fandom fans like you, the Hogan Fund was able to meet their initial goal of $350,000 but that does not mean you can’t still contribute. A life-changing injury like this will come with many unforeseeable challenges.

There is no limit on how much you can donate; any little bit helps this couple in their time of need.  There are no rewards or perks, only the heartwarming feeling of an act of pure kindness. And, in this challenging year, couldn’t we all use a little more kindness?

If you are unable to contribute using GoFundMe, Ulrich has provided alternative ways to donate.
