One of the highlights of the 2023 movie scene was the Barbenheimer phenomenon in which two drastically different films, Greta Gerwig’s hot pink feminist adventure Barbie and Christopher Nolan’s somber historical narrative Oppenheimer, shared a release date. (I personally got an even bigger kick out of “Saw Patrol” when torture porn horror film Saw X and children’s cartoon PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie came out on the same date later in the year, although this crossover received far less attention than Barbenheimer.) Barbie ultimately defeated Oppenheimer at both the domestic and international box office, but the next battle is just beginning: both films have been nominated for the esteemed title of Best Picture at the 96th Academy Awards.
The other movies competing against Barbie and Oppenheimer are Cord Jefferson’s American Fiction, Justine Triet’s Anatomy of a Fall, Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers, Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, Bradley Cooper’s Maestro, Celine Song’s Past Lives, Yorgos Lanthimos’s Poor Things, and Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest. As with last year, Regal Cinemas will be bringing all 10 films back to the big screen during the week leading up to the ceremony with their Best Picture Film Festival. All of the nominees will each play on three different days between March 1st and 10th (with the exception of Anatomy of a Fall, which is only playing on two days).
