This week we’re shining our spotlight on California cosplayer Blue Eyed Cosplay (she/her)!
How long have you been a cosplayer?
I started cosplaying in 2013, so it’ll be eleven years this July!
What got you into cosplay?
When I went to my first anime convention, I saw a lot of people dressed up as different characters. At the time, I didn’t know that was a thing people did! I saw everyone having so much fun that I almost felt left out. I wanted to be able to experience having that much fun at a con while dressed up.
Do you make, buy, or is it a combination?
For me, it’s a combination. I unfortunately don’t have a lot of spare time to make every single piece of a cosplay from scratch. I usually buy the main part of cosplays (ie: the outfit and wigs) and make the smaller parts that won’t take a lot of time for me to make (ie: horns, tails, small accessories)
Oh gosh, my very first cosplay was actually two different ones. They were both from Hetalia. One day I dressed up as America and the next day I dressed as Fem! Russia.
My latest cosplay that’s complete is Vil Schoenheit from Twisted Wonderland. I hate to be biased, but I think so far, this is my favorite cosplay!
My favorite thing is meeting so many people through cosplay. I have had the pleasure of meeting so many gifted creators and learned so much from them. Through cosplay and social media, we’re able to share our processes and support each other.
My least favorite thing about being a cosplayer is dealing with people who are rude or plain creepy. I’ve dealt with people who didn’t like the cosplay a group and I did together because it “wasn’t anime related”. We didn’t ask for their opinions nor did we want their blessings. My group and I were having fun being silly and that’s all that matters. I’ve also had friends who have been harassed or approached by people who didn’t respect their boundaries. Just because we’re cosplaying doesn’t mean we are the actual characters and you’re free to touch us. Remember friends: cosplay is not consent.
I work several jobs. My two main jobs are working at a physical therapy clinic and running social media accounts for a non profit business. I’m also attending school for another degree so that I may get a better position at a PT clinic.
Oh my top fandoms always change every year! As of right now though, my top three are:
My next cosplays that I’m planning next are Azul Ashengrotto from Twisted Wonderland and Bunny Girl 002 from Darling in the FRANXX. I can’t wait to share them with everyone when they’re finally done!
My advice for new cosplayers is whatever cosplay you want to do: just go for it! You can be anyone you want to be whether it’s a human, animal, or even a mecha. As long as you have fun putting it together and wearing it, that’s all that matters. It’s always a little nerve wracking taking the first step but once you do, you’ll never want to go back.
I’m on Instagram and TikTok both under the user name @blue.eyed.cosplay If anyone has questions, I’ll be happy to answer them.
