Spooky Season is upon us. People love horror movies. They love the thrills and chills that come with horror. Sometimes though, we don’t always want a really scary, blood-filled horror movie. Sometimes we want a fun spooky esque movie to put us in the Halloween mood.
Every year many people put on classic spooky season movies such as Hocus Pocus and the Addams Family. You can check out my list of classic fun spooky movies here. But, how about watching some underrated ones that should be talked about more? Here are 5 underrated movies to watch during the spooky season.
Death Becomes Her
Monster House
Monster House is so creative and inventive, that I still don’t understand how it isn’t talked about more. Three kids believe that a creepy-looking house is alive and they have to do all they can to stop the house before Halloween. This movie is perfect for a spooky season and great for kids as well as adults. The jokes, writing, and animation are all a treat.
Haunt
Haunt is one of the most fun spooky movies in recent years. On Halloween, a group of friends find an extreme haunted house and decide to try it out. Little do they know the people in charge are murder happy and psychotic. This movie is full of great characters, tons of suspense, and easily one of the best-haunted house movies ever made.
The People Under the Stairs
One of the most underrated films directed by Wes Craven is The People Under the Stairs. A movie that has just about everything. When a young kid gets locked inside the home of his family’s landlords, he discovers the landlords are keeping mutated people under the stairs. The young boy has to find a way to escape with his life. This movie is creepy, it’s funny, it’s creative and highly entertaining. It also has very memorable characters. It feels like a horror film and a cozy fantasy at the same time. Check this one out if you haven’t seen it. It is great for a spooky season.
Ginger Snaps
The amount of people who haven’t seen this movie still surprises me. The plot follows Ginger who after getting attacked by a creature starts acting differently. It is now up to her sister to save Ginger and herself. This is a smart, funny coming-of-age werewolf film. The script is intelligent and the effects are fun. It does a great job of mixing horror and teenage angst. It’s simply awesome.
Idle Hands
Once again, here is a movie that does not get the respect that it deserves. Idle Hands tells the story of a slacker named Anton. Anton doesn’t do much. Because of this, his hand becomes possessed by the devil and begins to go on a killing spree. This is a great one to watch during the Halloween season. It has a great cast featuring Devon Sawa, Seth Green, and Vivica A. Fox. The makeup and soundtrack are awesome. It is a fun time throughout. Great splatter and hilarious, this one should be watched.
