2025 Oscars Best Picture Predictions

The biggest night for movies is almost here once again. We had a great 2024 filled with tons of interesting and worthy films. This is honestly one of the hardest years to predict anything, but I will try my best.  This was a year of controversy, a surprise love for horror and breakout performances. With the Oscars airing this weekend, here are the 10 nominees up for Best Picture ranked by which I predict are likely to come out on top.

10. Emilia Perez

The downfall of Emilia Perez might just be studied for years to come. Not too long ago, this movie was once said to be a front runner. Now there is too much controversy. Many say the movie is a poor representation of Mexican culture as well as harmful to the trans community. The icing on the cake was the uncovered tweets from Karla Sofia Gascon which revealed much bigotry. There is just about no chance that Emilia Perez will win this award.

9. Nickel Boys

Nickel Boys is a heartbreakingly beautiful movie about two boys who befriend each other while in a reform school in 1960s Florida.  It’s a movie that was beloved by critics but was sadly not seen by many as it failed at the box office. The movie’s first-person perspective was also pretty divisive. A good movie but no threat to win Best Picture.

8. I’m Still Here

I’m Still Here is a touching family drama about political tension in Brazil. Based on a true story, it is well-made and touching. The reason it likely won’t win Best Picture is because everyone seems to only be talking about lead actress Fernanda Torres. There is a good chance she could win and that I’m Still Here could win Best International Feature, though.

7. Dune: Part 2

Dune: Part 2 is a visionary achievement. The movie will, in my mind, go home with some sort of Oscar gold. Best Picture isn’t going to be one of them though. The movie, while being a box office success, may have peaked too early. The movie was released in early 2024, and sometimes that does matter. Sometimes the movie that is fresh in voters’ minds has a better chance of winning.

6. The Substance

As a massive horror fan, I am beyond happy that The Substance was nominated. There have been so many horror films that have been worthy of being nominated throughout the years, but the Academy tends to overlook horror. It seems like lead actress Demi Moore could take home some gold, and the movie could do very well in the makeup department.

5. A Complete Unknown

The biopic based on Bob Dylan has grown some steam recently. The music as well as the performances have been praised specifically from Timothee Chalamet’s strong portrayal. The movie has a more than decent chance at winning simply because it came out at the right time and has been talked about for weeks.

4. Wicked

Wicked was one of the biggest movies of 2024. This movie has become beloved by fans of the original Broadway show and nonfans alike. The movie could very well win Best Picture simply due to not having any controversies and being so liked. There may be some voters who don’t see it as a complete movie and may be waiting to reward it some more when the second part comes out.

3. Conclave

Similar to Wicked, Conclave doesn’t have any controversy surrounding it. It’s a movie that everyone who watched it seemed to like. It has amazing cinematography as well as incredible acting and a great twist. This one could win the Oscar, but two other movies have a stronger chance in my opinion.

2. The Brutalist

The Brutalist is about a Holocaust survivor who looks to capitalize on the American Dream. The movie is an epic film with strong performances. There was a bit of controversy due to AI usage, but Emilia Perez made a lot of people forget about it. The Academy loves a movie like this. It checks every box of what an Oscar winning movie should be, but in my opinion, it won’t win.

1. Anora

Anora is a fantastic film. It is the type of movie that on the surface you may think won’t be for everyone. But, everyone who I have talked to who has seen it, can take something away from it. It is beautifully shot, well acted, funny, well written, emotional, etc. It has everything that makes a great film. It also has gained momentum in the Best Picture race and this is why I believe it will win the award.
