2008’s The Strangers is widely considered to be one of the great home invasion slasher films of all time. Its success spawned the release of a sequel – The Strangers: Prey at Night – which arrived nearly ten years later.
Given the length of time between each film, it would appear that a return to this world was not a high priority. Well, according to reports, The Strangers doesn’t just have one sequel in the works, but three!
Speaking on Bloody Disgusting’s: The Boo Crew Podcast, the film’s producer Roy Lee revealed some exciting news about The Strangers, saying:
“I think the next three are in production next month with another filmmaker that people will know.”
No other details were revealed but to have three movies in production at once is a rare occurrence. Netflix adopted this strategy and released its Fear Street Trilogy last year, which proved to be a successful decision.
While unconfirmed at this time, a later report from Bloody Disgusting has revealed that Renny Harlin is being brought in to direct at least one of the sequels, if not all three. Harlin has a long history in the horror genre, directing entries like A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master in 1988. His horror credits also include Prison (1987), Deep Blue Sea (1999), Exorcist: The Beginning (2004), The Covenant (2006), and Devil’s Pass (2013).
Harlin’s work outside the horror genre has seen him direct Die Hard 2 (1990) and Cliffhanger (1993).
2008’s The Strangers, which starred Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman, sees a couple tormented by a masked trio whilst staying at their vacation home. The sequel took the terror to a trailer park, where the masked killers returned to terrorize a new family. Both attacks were given no reason, which makes the films all the more unsettling.
Hopefully, it won’t be too long before we find out where they’ll strike next.
