Dolph Lundgren’s Aquaman 2 Comments Revive Amber Heard Backlash

On January 31, 2021, action star Dolph Lundgren appeared on a virtual panel with Wizard World, which can be watched in full on our Youtube Channel.

During the virtual experience, Lundgren shared that he may be filming Aquaman 2 this upcoming summer. Fans of the Aquaman film know that Dolph Lundgren played the role of King Nereus. This news comes to us after Yahya Abdul-Mateen II(Black Manta) posted a tweet working on his “waves.”

Today, the pop culture site Fandom retweeted Lundgren’s quote from our video. This sent the internet into a frenzy!

However, fans of the Aquaman franchise became divided. While there was a shared excitement about a sequel, many felt uncomfortable with Amber Heard returning as Mera.

If you are confused about why fans want Heard removed from the film, then you might not frequent the internet. In 2016, Amber Heard filed for divorce from Johnny Depp. She cited physical abuse as the reason for the divorce. Depp and Heard settled for 7 million and the divorce was finalized in 2017. In December 2018, Heard wrote an op-ed for The Washington Post saying she was abused, though in that op-ed Amber never mentioned her ex-husband’s name.

In 2019, Depp sued Heard for $50 million for defamation over the article. In 2020, Depp provided evidence, including phone recordings and photos, that it was he who was being abused by Amber. This prompted fans to create the hashtag #IStandWithDepp and #JusticeForDepp. On November 6, 2020, Johnny Depp was fired from the Fantastic Beasts sequel film and later replaced by Mads Mikkelsen.

Fans were and are still outraged that Amber Heard has faced no repercussions for the physical abuse she inflicted on Depp. It is reported that Amber Heard will still be reprising her role as Mera in Aquaman 2, hence the current public outrage.

No one, not even Dolph Lundgren himself, could have predicted that his mentioning of Aquaman 2 would resurface the widespread disdain for Heard.  Will the public outcry get Amber Heard removed from the film? Only time will tell.

Where do you stand on the spectrum? Are you excited about the news or upset that Amber Heard will be returning? Share with us your feedback in the comments and online.

  1. As a fan of comic books and the DCEU…. I will not be putting my money toward anything further from DCEU or any other project AH is involved in filming. Actor contracts of this magnitude have “character clauses” to protect the studio from an actor under contract bringing them bad publicity and during the London trial she was clearly the gaslighting abuser of the relationship. She should be held accountable.
