Todd Phillips delivered his very own Valentine’s Day present by revealing a first look at Lady Gaga in the upcoming Joker sequel, Folie à Deux.
Released via the directors personal Instagram account, the image shows Gaga in a scene with Joaquin Phoenix in all his Joker glory. You can check it out for yourselves, below.
While unconfirmed, Gaga is expected to play Harley Quinn in the film which will serve as part of DC’s new Elseworlds franchise. The character is no stranger to the DC franchise, with Margot Robbie recently playing the role in entries such as Birds of Prey and James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad.
Speaking in a recent interview, Robbie spoke about her excitement for Gaga potentially taking on the role, saying:
“It makes me so happy because I said from the very beginning, all I want is for Harley Quinn to be one of those characters, the way like Macbeth or Batman always gets passed from great actor to great actor. It’s such an honor to have built a foundation strong enough that Harley can now be one of those characters that other actors get to have a go at playing, I think she’ll do something incredible with it.”
The term Folie à deux translates into English as “madness for two,” and references a medical term for shared psychosis, which seems to indicate that the complex relationship between Joker and Harley will be explored even further in the film.
Joaquin Phoenix will return to play the Joker, with Todd Phillips also back on board to direct.
The film will also see Zazie Beetz reprise the role of Sophie Dumond, alongside Brendan Gleeson (The Banshees of Inisherin, Mr. Mercedes) and Catherine Keener (Get Out, Brand New Cherry Flavor).
2019’s Joker was a huge box office success, generating a return of over $1 billion worldwide. The film also received awards recognition with Phoenix receiving the Best Actor award at the Oscars for his portrayal of Arthur Fleck/Joker.
Joker: Folie à Deux is set to hit theatres on October 4th, 2024.
