In a somewhat surprising turn, the sequel to the hit film M3GAN underperformed significantly this weekend. A movie from the director of Top Gun Maverick dominated, and what is going on with Elio? Here are your weekend box office results.
1. F1: The Movie dominated this weekend’s box office, bringing in 55.6 million dollars. The movie did cost a lot to make, but the good news is it is making plenty of money overseas, and word of mouth has been great. Coming from the director of Top Gun Maverick, which made over a billion dollars, doesn’t hurt either.
2. How to Train Your Dragon continues to make money and please audiences. The movie took in 19.4 million dollars, bringing its worldwide total to over 450 million dollars. A sequel seems inevitable.
3. Elio made 10. 7 million dollars in its second weekend. This is very disappointing for Disney as the movie hasn’t even made 75 million worldwide yet and it cost at least 150 million to make.
4. M3GAN 2.0 took in 10.2 million dollars in its first weekend. The first movie made about 30 million in its opening weekend and went on to make almost 200 million dollars worldwide. There was an incredible amount of marketing for this sequel, so the low box office is a bit of a shock. It could be due to the genre change. While the first movie is basically a slasher film, the sequel goes the Terminator 2 route and becomes more of an action film. Except Terminator 2 made way more money. The good thing about Blumhouse is that they make their movies very cheap. M3GAN 2.0 cost between 15 and 25 million to make. So, even if it loses money, it won’t lose much.
5. 28 Years Later took in 9.7 million dollars, landing it in the 5th spot in its second week. The movie domestically hasn’t been a huge hit, but unlike Elio, the worldwide box office has helped it. It also cost much less to make.
