James Carter Cathcart Dead at 71

American voice actor James Carter Cathcart, well-known as Jimmy Zoppi, passed away from throat cancer on Tuesday, July 8th. A lover of music and a voice for animated shows, Cathcart will be greatly missed.

Best known for his many roles in Pokémon, fans will remember him through hundreds of episodes and plenty of movies with the voices of Professor Oak, Gary Oak, Meowth, James, and other smaller roles. He also voiced characters shows such as Yu-Gi-Oh!Sonic XTeenage Mutant Ninja TurtlesThe World of Narue, and Mashed. Not only that, but he also acted in many videos like Shadow the Hedgehog, Pokémon Masters, and Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Cathcart kept his passion for decades, retiring from voice acting only a couple years ago in 2023 as his throat cancer advanced.

Michele Knotz, Pokémon costar who voiced Jessie, May, Misty, Nurse Joy, and others, shared her grief and love on social media: “To say Carter was talented is an understatement. He was a genius. I looked up to him so much. He was hands down the most creative, beautiful, and insightful person I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with.”

We at Fandom Spotlite would like to express our condolences to his family, friends, and fans.
