Ghibli Fest 2023 To Include Spirited Away: Live On Stage

Every year, Regal Cinemas brings a selection of beloved Studio Ghibli films back to the big screen via their Ghibli Fest. Each month from March to October, a different Studio Ghibli film will play in participating Regal theaters for 2-5 days. This year, the lineup is a little different than usual: April’s “film” will be the new stage production of Spirited Away.

The first-ever official stage production of the iconic movie was performed at the Imperial Theater in Tokyo, Japan in 2022, with two different casts. A professional recording of the cast that features Kanna Hashimoto as the protagonist Chihiro will play in theaters across North America on April 23rd, while the cast with Mone Kamishiraishi as Chihiro will play on April 27th. You can watch the captivating trailer below.

Before this never-before-seen masterpiece hits theaters, however, Ghibli Fest kicks off later this month with another classic: My Neighbor Totoro. The film will be playing with original Japanese audio and English subtitles on March 25th and 28th and dubbed in English on March 26th, 27th, and 29th.

As for the remainder of the festival, the schedule is as follows:
May: Ponyo
June: Kiki’s Delivery Service
July: Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind & Castle in the Sky
August: Princess Mononoke, Porco Rosso, & The Wind Rises
September: Howl’s Moving Castle
October: Spirited Away (original film)
