Malignant Star Confirms A Sequel Is Being Discussed

Producer and Director James Wan delivered us one of the most unique and bizarre horror films of recent times with Malignant.

The film received mixed responses amongst the horror community with many fans either loving or hating it.  Whatever side of the fence you fall on, it certainly left an impression. (Check out our review here)

Given the ambiguous ending, fans speculated whether we will see more installments of the film moving forward. Wan’s previous work on films such as The Conjuring, Insidious and Saw have all spawned sequels and it seems like that trend might continue with Malignant.

The film’s star, Annabelle Wallis, spoke with Screen Rant this week, suggesting a sequel is on the table.

“There’s plenty of ideas swirling around. We were very, very flattered by the reception and I think taken aback by the reception. So yeah, there’s lots of conversations happening.”

In a previous interview with Bloody Disgusting, Wan spoke about the possibility of a sequel, noting that he’s unsure whether he’ll ever get the freedom to make another movie like Malignant.

“I went out to do something original that wasn’t based on an IP, but still be inspired by all the stuff that I love, all those influences that I have in my life and hark back to the movies that I broke out with at the start of my career. I wanted to go back and make a movie for the fans, for the horror fans, the hardcore horror fans that have been around and that have supported me, and I want to go back and do something like that again.”

He also added:

“I don’t know when I’ll ever get the chance to do something as crazy and outrageous as this again, so I’ll take this opportunity.

There certainly seems to be an appetite for revisiting this world, but we will have to wait and see if the conversations materialize into something.

Whatever the outcome, there’s no doubting any future addition needs the tagline “He’s Back!”.

Malignant is now available on Blu-ray.
