Avatar weekend is finally here, and the box office results are in. Did the newest James Cameron film meet expectations, though? We also have SpongeBob back in theatres, and Zootopia 2 is on track to be the highest-grossing movie of the year. This is your weekend box office results.
1. Avatar: Fire and Ash took in 88 million dollars in its opening weekend. This is over 40 million dollars less than the last installment. The Avatar movies have collectively grossed over $2 billion worldwide and have broken multiple records. They usually are slow-moving as well, collecting their money little by little. It will be interesting to see if the third film in the franchise can also generate as much revenue despite receiving worse reviews than its predecessors.

2. David took in 22 million dollars this past weekend. The animated film telling the story of David and Goliath was distributed by Angel Studios. The studio is known for having faithful moviegoers, so it is no surprise that this movie has done so well already.

3. The Housemaid made 18.9 million dollars, coming in third place for the weekend. The movie, based on the popular novel, has done very well so far against its 35 million dollar budget. Time will tell if it will continue to do well in the upcoming weeks.

4. The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants came in fourth place, making 16 million dollars. Despite fantastic reviews from critics, the movie seemed to pick a bad time to release, going up against Avatar. With Christmas break coming up, though, the movie could definitely make its money back with families.

5. Zootopia 2 made another 14.5 million dollars. The movie is now at 1.2 billion dollars worldwide. The movie will most likely continue to have legs throughout the holiday season and could end up being the highest-grossing film of 2025.

Join us next week for the final box office results of 2025.
