31 Days of Frights: Psycho Goreman Movie Review

We continue our 31 Days of Frights with Psycho Goreman from 2020. Intergalactic assassins converge on a small town after two siblings unwittingly resurrect an ancient alien overlord. This movie is one of the most fun sci-fi horror movies in recent memory.

The Story

A young girl and her brother find an unusual gem that awakens an alien killing machine. With this gem, though, they have all the power over him. What would you do if you had a killer alien all to yourself? They use this power to play games, play dress up, and even form a rock band. When other aliens find out that Psycho Goreman has been awakened, they set out to find him and the kids.

This movie does a great job at blending cartoony comedic fun and brutal gory violence. The title isn’t even the alien’s real name. The little girl who finds him names him Psycho Goreman because she wants to. Nita-Josee Hanna plays the young girl Mimi. It is often hilarious how she doesn’t care about all the constant threats the alien throws at her. She is just happy to make a new friend.

The movie is a mix of E.T., The Toxic Avenger, and Power Rangers. If you like any of these things, you might like this. It is completely over the top in the best way possible. The movie keeps your attention for its full runtime with its vibrant colors and smart script. The most impressive thing about this movie is the special effects. A lot of the aliens shown in this movie are done with incredible 80s-inspired practical effects. They are imaginative and one of a kind. What we get here is an homage to 80s family fun movies while not shying away from plenty of horror elements.

Overall

Psycho Goreman reminds me of a Saturday morning cartoon. It’s fast, stylish, and keeps your attention. The movie is destined to become a cult favorite due to its quotable dialogue, killer soundtrack, and memorable characters. I quote this one often with friends who have seen it, and that is what this movie is. One where you grab some pizza and friends and dive into a bizarre movie full of gore, laughs, and creativity.

Psycho Goreman is available to watch on Shudder.

Come back tomorrow for some more spooky reviews.
