Production for Samara Weaving’s upcoming action-horror film Azrael is underway and details about the film are starting to be revealed.
News about the release broke last year, but plot details have remained under wraps until now. Shared via Deadline, the film’s official plot has now been revealed (below) alongside a bloody first-look image of Weaving in action (above).
The film, which is currently in post-production, is set in a world in which no one speaks and follows a devout female-led community which hunts down a young woman who has escaped her imprisonment. Recaptured by its ruthless leaders, Azrael (Weaving) is due to be sacrificed to pacify an ancient evil deep within the surrounding wilderness – but she has other ideas.
Evan Katz (Haunting Of Bly Manor) serves as director for the film, with scriptwriting duties handed to Simon Barrett (You’re Next).
Michael Rothstein, head of Mossbank (the company responsible for the film’s International sales), spoke more about the release, saying:
“From the first minute we read it, we were captivated by the world of Azrael and the potential of a film so relentless and action-packed for its genre – distinguished by its own unique “voice,” which has so much to say. E.L. Katz and Simon Barrett have delivered something truly visionary, which will undoubtedly connect with a global legion of fans. And we couldn’t think of a more perfect heroine in Samara Weaving, who’s at the peak of her powers right now.”
Weaving has made quite the name for herself since breaking onto the scene in 2019’s wildly entertaining horror-comedy, Ready or Not. Previous work in the genre has also included starring roles in 2017’s The Babysitter, and its 2020 sequel The Babysitter: Killer Queen. She will also reunite with Ready or Not directors Radio Silence for the upcoming sixth installment of the Scream franchise.
