This weekend when it comes to the box office we have a big surprise and one big disappointment. The three big releases this weekend were Borderlands, It Ends With Us, and Cuckoo. Deadpool and Wolverine stayed strong but almost got beat. Here are your domestic weekend box office results.
1. Deadpool & Wolverine remained number one taking in another 54 million dollars. With this, it has passed the 1 billion dollar mark with a total of 1.029 billion dollars. The movie has been a huge success for Marvel with critics and audiences alike.
2. It Ends With Us was a huge hit on its opening weekend taking in 50 million dollars domestically and already 80 million worldwide. The movie is based on the massive hit novel written by Colleen Hoover and it really seems book lovers came out to the theatre this weekend. With a 25 million dollar budget, this seems like a big win for Sony Pictures. The movie is also very well-received among audiences.
3. Twisters took the third spot this weekend bringing in another 15 million dollars for a total of around 310 million dollars worldwide. Just shows the summer blockbuster is alive and well. Well, not for all blockbusters…
4. Borderlands took fourth place bringing in a disappointing 8.8 million dollars. The film is currently getting abysmal reviews with a 9% on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences claim the movie lacks the spirit of the game and feels like a hollow version of Guardians of the Galaxy. With a budget between 110 and 120 million dollars, this might be the biggest bomb of the year. Bad word of mouth won’t help either.
5. Despicable Me 4 remains in the top five with another 8 million dollars this past weekend. The total is now at around 807 million dollars. For the fourth entry in this franchise, it feels like it hasn’t lost steam.
The other new release this weekend was the horror film Cuckoo. It came in ninth place grossing a little over 3 million dollars. The movie was not released in as many theatres though and it only cost 7 million dollars to make. With good word of mouth, this one should make a profit.
It will be interesting to see if Deadpool can reign supreme once more with Alien Romulus releases next week. Come back next week to see what happens at the box office.
