HBO Max’s upcoming reboot of the Final Destination franchise finally has its directors, with filmmakers Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein set to helm the project.
The news comes via The Hollywood Reporter, who report that the duo known for 2018’s sci-fi thriller Freaks have been tasked with relaunching New Line’s horror franchise. The original franchise producer Craig Perry is producing once again alongside Spider-Man: No Way Home director Jon Watts and Sheila Hanahan Taylor.
Per the report:
Finding a new director took up a good portion of the year, with over two hundred candidates submitted by agencies and management firms. Lipovsky and Stein rose to the top thanks to their ideas and passion for the Final Destination brand.
Guy Busick (Ready or Not, Scream 2022) teams up with Lori Evans Taylor (Wicked Wicked Games) to pen the script.
Plot details remain under wraps for now, but the premise for each film so far has remained the same: A character has a premonition of a horrific and deadly event, cheats his or her own death, and saves several other lives in the process, only to have Death, as a personified but unstoppable force, come for the survivors one by one.
The film’s IMDB page writes a brief synopsis, which reads: “As a group of first responders escape death’s grasp, they start to be killed by increasingly unlikely and killer mishaps.”
While you can be forgiven in thinking that the next installment will follow the same path, Final Destination creator Jeffrey Reddick recently teased fans what they could expect, hinting that the new film will mix up the classic formula:
“I will say that it’s not just going to be another kind of ‘we set up a group of people, they cheat death, and then just death gets them.’ This one is a true Final Destination movie, but it doesn’t follow that kind of formula that we’ve kind of established.”
The Final Destination franchise has earned an impressive $700 million globally to date, making it New Line’s third-biggest horror franchise. Only The Conjuring Universe and the two It movies have surpassed it.
No release date has been announced, but Final Destination 6 it is expected to stream exclusively on HBO Max.
