The Conjuring Universe continues to grow with the next installment of the franchise bringing us the return of the demon Valak in The Nun 2. Production for the film is underway with The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It director Michael Chaves set to helm the project. Casting information has been limited so far with only Bonnie Aarons confirmed to return as Valak, but it now looks like the film has its lead.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Euphoria’s Storm Reid has landed the leading role for the upcoming sequel. Reid is known for her breakout role in the Oscar-winning drama 12 Years a Slave and for leading Disney’s A Wrinkle of Time. More recent appearances include roles in The Invisible Man, James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad and the aforementioned HBO Series, Euphoria. Reid is also set star in HBO’s upcoming horror-drama series, The Last of Us, which is scheduled for release in 2023.
Plot details for The Nun 2 have been limited but a synopsis for the film reads:
1956 – France. A priest is murdered. An evil is spreading. The sequel to the worldwide smash hit THE NUN follows SISTER IRENE as she once again comes face to face with the demonic force VALAK – THE DEMON NUN.
Although The Nun was widely criticized as one of the weaker entries of The Conjuring Universe, it scared up an impressive $365 million at the worldwide box office, making it the highest-grossing film of the franchise. The film was set in 1952, only four years before the events of the upcoming sequel and starred Taissa Farmiga.
Malignant writer Akela Cooper penned the script for The Nun 2.
James Wan and Peter Safran are producing via their respective banners, Atomic Monster and The Safran Company. The duo have produced all eight of the Conjuring Universe movies.
The Nun 2 begins shooting in October and is scheduled for release in theatres on September 8th, 2023.
